I don't know the year, but it was in the time of the many treaties being written. Some of our leaders were asked to come to a council at Sandy Lake. Sandy Lake is about 120 miles north of what is now Minneapolis. Tribal representatives and elders from tribes in Wisconsin and Minnesota were asked to meet with some government officials in the late fall. The tribes arrived and set up a camp to wait for their hosts. Days went by and the weather grew colder.
By the time the people realized their hosts were not coming snow had fallen announcing the winter season. Travel was dangerous because of the cold and snow. Many of the elders froze to death. The government made no apology nor did they take any responsibility for the suffering. Some might ask me why I brought this up, at this time in our history. When I went to Carlisle Barracks to feel the place my great auntie and grandpa suffered in. I felt these relatives wanted me to see where they had been. I thought it no different than those who tour Auschwitz and Bergen Belsen. I think it no different than those who go to Flander's Field or any other related site. I think of even those who go to the Holy Land, Golgotha and the Wailing Wall in memory of the history these sites represent and in honor of those who suffered there. I met a Lakota woman some years ago who went to Sand Creek every year at the time of the massacre to camp and fast and pray. It was to honor the many who lost their lives at the hands of a demented leader of a group of state militia trained to kill Indians. I know there are a thousand other stories not told and as I try to remember, I do so, not because I haven't forgiven, but because every human being needs to know what the enemy's characteristics look like. He came to kill and to steal and pollute everything he could in his attempt to destroy all of the Creator's creation. I revere the life sacrificed at Calvary knowing why He went to that cross. I think of those who followed Him and how their lives were sacrificed because they refused to recant. Then, I think of our people, who lost their lives resisting the advance of the enemy's forces. What took place on our Turtle Island was not an act of God, but an act of God's enemy and those who have been converted to his evil. The purpose of the truth is to establish a barrier between good and evil, right and wrong, blessing and cursing. We can see the evil, the wrong, and the cursing. We are living in the midst of the cursing today. So, I want those who gave their lives for freedom and liberty at Sandy Lake, Sand Creek, Carlisle and so many other places to know I honor their memory. I want the children who lost their lives in the boarding and residential schools to know I have not forgotten them. I will not allow the enemy to take up residence and lead me into the land of forgetfulness. I say these things knowing there are many human beings who know nothing about these incidents I have mentioned and are not aware of the 100 million of us who perished on this continent since the arrival of the Waisichu (fat-takers). I know we are instructed not to war with flesh and blood, but with principalities and powers, and spiritual wickedness in high places. The humanity that promotes the evil have fallen under the enemy of all men's spell. There is only One who can free you.
